TOJAM 2014 – Survival Maybe Guaranteed

Category : Game Dev, Games, TOJAM · by Apr 25th, 2014

Tojam is just around the corner and I always find myself wishing I took the time to blog some of the fun but never do because I never have the time.  This year I’m going to try extra hard to take a break and post our current builds of the game so you can see what the game felt like every step of the way.

TEAM: SURVIVAL MAYBE GUARANTEED

A team of 9, making 2 games, with no promises.

FRIDAY 12PM – 43 HOURS LEFT

First sprites are in. 4 Players. Players can shoot and kill each other.  The yellow crate awards the player a random weapon which sets the players shoot speed, type and amount.

SATURDAY 1PM – 30 HOURS LEFT

Way more art is in.  The logic for all of the menu screens almost works.  You can now select how many players will be in the game.  Keys for players 3 and 4 are only usable by mapping a controller to key bindings.

SATURDAY 10PM – 21 HOURS LEFT

Everything is working. Game is already pretty damn good. New music, art and guns.

SUNDAY 7PM – 0 HOURS LEFT

We are done. Everything worked out perfectly. Best game jam I’ve ever done and I owe it all to my team. We ended up with pistols, shotguns, machine guns, mines, grenades, rockets, swords, bullets that bounce off walls, and a goat cannon. More mechanics than I ever thought were possible in an under 72 hour time period coding in JavaScript without any frameworks.  We got a great response from fellow game devs and even though I’m glad I can finally get some sleep, I’m sad that it’s over.
